Dear Dann, thanks for your comment. I must confess that, while not using one directly, my impressions of the Metro interface are overall positive - at least they
tried to create something different from an iPhone clone. The overall idea of using WPF and Silverlight as a basis for the user interface is a real improvement (notice
that Nokia, with declarative Qt interfaces, is moving in the same direction) but of course the proof is in the execution. I am not sure that Microsoft will be able to
steer the market again in direction of Phone7; developers are the key, and some pieces are still missing (I reckon that Visual Studio 2010 still does not support
mobile programming) while the overall incentive structure is unclear. All in all, we live in uncertain times :-)

Areas where the web leads: hyperlinks and ease of installation.

Any app environment that doesn't hyperlink is severely deficient, which is why all we see now is hybrids that are chock full of hooks to start a seperate web browser. :D

And you ask "what installation?" Exactly.

Finally, Windows Phone 7 comes with great user experiences...

How many users are getting this great user experience?

ZERO!

While Microsoft is off pointing at how other OEM's are doing it wrong, they themselves have absolutely nothing to show for the years they've spent developing this "killer phone os".

Microsoft: The number one leader in vapourware.

Meanwhile customers have choices in their phones, whether it's apple, rim, google, or nokia.
It's only a matter of time before you become irrelevant, Ballmer.

[...] Web versus Apps: what is missing in HTML5 3D gaming: There is at the moment no way to create something like the Epic Citadel demo, or Carmack’s RAGE engine on iOS. The only potential alternative is WebGL, that is (like the previous links) based on OpenGL 2.0 ES, and paints on the HTML5 canvas (that, in the presence of proper support for hardware compositing, should allow for complex interfaces and effects). The problem is that browser support is still immature – most browsers are still experimenting in an accelerated compositing pipeline right now, and there are still lots of problems that need to be solved before the platform can be considered stable. However, after the basic infrastructure is done, there is no reason for not seeing things like the current state of the art demos on the web; modern in-browser Javascript JIT are good enough for action and scripting, web workers and web sockets are stable enough to create complex, asynchronous event models. It will take an additional year, probably, until the 3D support is good enough to see something like WoW inside a browser. [...]

Dear Sam, thanks for the comment. Of course I know the project you mention (some were mentioned in the post as well). As for O3D, it is being turned into a layer on tom of WebGL, and while I agree that DRM is a misfeature I know (for direct talks with a number of telcos and content providers) that there is no way of avoiding Flash or Silverlight or proprietary plugins unless content protection is included. I am not a fan of it (on the contrary- I believe that from a technical and economical point of view they are useless or worse) but I have to accept the current technical landscape, and in this sense I prefer a user managed and open source DRM to a proprietary and unmanaged one.
My point is that by enhancing the current standards, it is possible to have a totally open and user-centered environment for any kind of media - be it 2d, 3d, application or whatever, and in my opinion the current, extraordinary competition between the Mozilla and Webkit group is a very positive effect in this direction (as the participation of many companies and groups in Webkit itself, like RIM and Nokia).
As for the wildernessdowntown, yes - unfortunately it does have no street view imagery of my old street :-) It is a quite nice demo of HTML5, however.
