I agree with I still think that App stores is really useful and beneficial to everyone. In Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of web browsers, and the convenience of using a web browser as a client, sometimes called a thin client.

The Linux kernel as frequently distributed and used is not entirely free, this is no surprise to developers, surely? It would be good to be able to use an entirely free distro such as trisquel in all hardware and find it works. The Libre software cause has a pretty rough ride, not least suffering from a lack of high profile media coverage and its attendant high profile criticism. Maybe Stallman has found a way to put that right? More power to his elbow.

Is it in the content output by javac that is then converted by dx? Does that mean that Oracle claims some copyright on the .class files any developer makes because they contain something included by the javac or it’s runtime?

I wouldn't say libjpeg is "good"; I'd only describe it as "not bad." The bottom line is it hasn't been updated in over a decade, and some of the techniques they use are questionable at best (the static quantization tables, the scaling methods of the quantization tables, not using arithmetic encoding, etc.). Arithmetic encoding alone actually completely erases the low bitrate advantage held by WebP.

In short, JPEG could be _much_ better than it is today--I think the encoder implementations that are available in open source aren't that inspiring.

[...] It could have been different: Android, Google and all that If there’s one thing that is totally clear, is that Android is ravaging the smartphone market, and all those that are feeling the heat are trying to use the most innovative and transparent approach to stop it: sue Google and its partners out in the oblivion. Software patents, design patents, copyrights, plain trolling- anything goes if it can help in stop the Droid juggernaut. At the same time, Google is under attack for its delay in publishing the Honeycomb source code, attacked for the half-backed results that can be witnessed in some tablet products, all of this in an environment where Android phone makers are obtaining extraordinary revenues, in large part thanks to those contested products (Samsung comes to mind).
